Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are one of the longest lasting, most functional couples in Hollywood — but believe it or not, that was NOT love at first sight!
(Holy s**t, is that the secret??)
The couple first met at a birthday dinner for a mutual friend, Forgetting Sarah Marshall producer Shauna Robertson, way back in 2007. And it was not obvious that night the two would end up happily married with two kids 12 years later.

In a new interview on Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist, airing this weekend with a preview on E! News Friday, Kristen reveals the not so auspicious origins of their courtship. For one thing, she points out:
“I had just gotten out of a long term relationship.”
Yeah, not usually a good place to start. At best, you’re usually firmly in rebound territory. At worst, you’re completely invisible. That was about where Dax started out.
Let’s just say the moment isn’t frozen in KBell’s memory…
“The only thing that I remember is that he talked so much. I was like, ‘This guy can talk!'”
Yeah, she basically didn’t even REMEMBER meeting him! Ouch! She was not familiar with him, just that he was on MTV. She admits:
“I didn’t know who he was. I was like, ‘Maybe that’s one of the guys from Jackass or something?'”
He was actually one of the original impressively straight-faced improvisational actors on Ashton Kutcher‘s prank show Punk’d.
And Kristen stood out for him a bit more. She says he at least has an impression of her from that night:
“He remembers, ‘You were telling a really intense story about a deal you had gotten at Target.’ And I was like, ‘That sounds like it was on brand.’ And then we left. There were no sparks whatsoever.”
NO SPARKS??
How wild. We guess you never can tell.
Luckily the universe wasn’t done trying to put these crazy kids together. They happened to see one another at a Redwings hockey game a couple weeks later (they’re both natives of Detroit) and this time they hit it off a bit more.
But not in a making-out-on-the-ice way. They didn’t even exchange numbers! But that didn’t stop Dax! Kristen explains:
“I get a text that says, ‘Hi, my name is Dax. I violated your privacy and got your number from Shauna. How do you feel about that?'”
Not a great start, right?
“And I was like, ‘Excuse me? You sound stimulating.'”
Well, not where we thought that was going! Apparently Kristen liked the line-crossing bad boys back then! She says:
“He’s so bold and that was my kind of person. I was like, ‘OK, starting it off with a really good joke that makes me feel, like, butterflies.'”
And the rest is Hollywood power couple history!
