We have some good news and some bad news.
The good news is that if you’re like most people out there, you’re not washing your jeans every time you wear them. And the CEO of Levi Strauss, Chip Bergh, wants you to know that’s totally OK!
In fact, he claims that’s how jeans are supposed to be worn. Who are we to argue with an expert, right??
The bad news is the way in which Chip decided to break this not-so-breaking news.
At a Fortune conference, he dropped a slightly horrifying tidbit about his own jeans, saying:
“If you talk to real denim aficionados, they’ll tell you don’t wash your blue jeans. These jeans are maybe a year old. These have yet to see a washing machine. I know that sounds totally disgusting. I know it does. But believe me, it can be done. You can spot-clean it, you can air dry it, and it’s fine. I have yet to get a skin disease or anything else.”
Ohhhhh man. More like he has ├óΓé¼┼ôyet to get a skin disease├óΓé¼┬¥… that he knows of!!
But let’s just give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that Chip got his jeans a year ago and has only worn them a few times since then. The thought of him wearing them daily without washing them Anderson Cooper–style makes our skin crawl!
Chip’s questionable hygiene aside, if you’re not washing your jeans every day, that’s great!
We just personally wouldn’t wait for over a year to stick them in the wash.
But clearly, it can be done!
