Mad Men Creator Payed Mad Money For Beatles Track!

We wonder if Don found enlightenment within the sitar twang and ethereal melodies ??
Hopefully for $250,000 he at least lightened up a bit!
On Sunday’s Mad Med episode the closing scene depicted Don Draper’s lady love leaving the apartment for an acting audition, thus signifying the end of his reign over her career (and her?).
Before she trots out the door, she hands him The Beatles Revolver album…cut to closing credits and the triptastic song Tomorrow Never Knows undulating in the background.
But there is a hefty price for Don’s musical education! Not only did creator Matthew Weiner fork over $250 K for the privilege, he had to convince Apple Corps that Tomorrow Never Knows would be used in an appropriate manner by sharing the context of its use, thus illuminating his highly secretive writing process.
Weiner reveals:

“It was hard, because I had to, writing-wise, commit to the story that I thought was worthy of this incredible opportunity. The thing about that song in particular was, the Beatles are, throughout their intense existence, constantly pushing the envelope, and I really wanted to show how far ahead of the culture they were. That song to me is revolutionary, as is that album.”

Well, we DO think the $$ and stress were worth it because as The Beatles were (and are) a cultural icon, so Mad Men has become, in its own, minor way…a marriage made in entertainment heaven!
Keep thrilling us with your exquisite stylings, Weiner!
