Malcolm-Jamal Warner‘s widow hinted at tension with her mother-in-law before filing her bombshell lawsuit.
CBS Mornings dropped a preview for the upcoming sit-down with Tenisha Warner on Wednesday, in which she opened up about her relationship with her husband’s mom, Pamela Warner, a year after he died in an accidental drowning while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica. Well, we should say lack thereof! She alluded to some distance between her and Pamela at the moment, though she didn’t mention anything about the behind-the-scenes legal drama!

Malcolm had been “very, very close” with his mother, who currently lives in Los Angeles, so Gayle King naturally asked if Tenisha now communicates and is close with her following this tragic loss. But instead of directly answering the question, she said:
“Yeah… Right now, everybody, like all of his family members and everyone who have lost him, they are grieving. You know, it’s been the biggest loss for all of us. Right now, my daughter and I are just like…”
Gayle chimed in to call the mother-daughter “a unit,” which Tenisha agreed with. She continued:
“Yeah, it’s … the emotional capacity that I have can be very limited sometimes, you know? And so, I have to, for myself, decide, ‘What do I have to give right now in this moment?’ And whatever I have to give, the first person to get that is my daughter. And then the second is myself.”
Little did Gayle or anyone else know that Tenisha planned on suing Pamela on the first anniversary of his death for more than $1.2 million from Malcolm’s family trust after he allegedly failed to uphold their prenuptial agreement. Following the preview, the journalist insisted she and CBS Mornings were unaware of the legal dispute — but she picked up on the tension between Tenisha and Pamela during the interview:
“We did this interview without knowing about this lawsuit. I was really just asking this question in passing because Pamela had spoken out — she and her son were very, very, very close. I thought her answer was telling when she said I can only do so much. It’s just myself and my daughter. That it wasn’t, you know, ‘Of course, we’re in communication. Of course, we’re both grieving.’ But I did not know that all of this was going on.”
No one expected it! That’s for sure!
Pamela hasn’t addressed the lawsuit yet. However, Tenisha told People after the suit became public that she tried to handle the problem privately and “had no choice” but to get the courts involved:
“For the last year, I have attempted to privately settle my beloved husband’s complicated estate and honor his last wishes. Malcolm had every intention to provide for our 9-year-old daughter and me.”
She claimed Malcolm came “close to finalizing a new estate plan” to replace the trust he created in 1996, but “was unable to do so before we lost him.” She added:
“I have been struggling to care for our daughter as a single mom and now as her sole provider. Legally, I had no choice but to take action to protect our rights before any potential statute of limitations expired.”
