Three nurses at an emergency center have been hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle… that was ironically dropping off a patient!
Over the weekend at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, an unidentified man sped into the ER around 4:22 a.m. with a passenger suffering from gunshot wounds. The driver pulled into the ambulance bay in a silver Jeep Cherokee and dropped off the 28-year-old male to be treated for his injuries. But we guess the driver didn’t want to answer questions about the gunshots — because he was in such a hurry to get out of there he caused more damage on the way out!

As three nurses rushed to the injured man to assess the situation, the driver panicked and attempted to flee the scene. When he drove off, he ended up hitting the responding nurses AND the gunshot victim! So awful…
The man he dropped off is believed to have suffered a serious head injury on top of the wounds he already had, and is now in critical condition, according to WPVI. Sadly, one of the nurses is also in critical condition. KYW reported a 36-year-old male nurse suffered facial injuries and internal bleeding after the collision. Luckily, the other two injured nurses, reported by the outlet to be a 37-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, are stable.
A rep for Penn Presbyterian Medical Center put out a statement regarding the injuries to their employees, saying:
“In a workplace where teams are devoted to caring for others, this incident is devastating to our staff, and is a reminder of the tragic, far-reaching toll of gun violence on entire communities. Violence against health care workers harms us all, and is a corrosive, unacceptable threat which our staff must cope with on a daily basis. Our heroic staff continued working to save the gunshot victim and care for all our other patients even as their own colleagues were suffering and being treated.”
Meanwhile, City Councilmember Jamie Gauthier spoke to KYW. She said of the horrific incident:
“I am praying that all three nurses make a full and speedy recovery, most especially the one who remains in critical condition. I also commend the emergency room team for continuing to care for their patients while dealing with this traumatic incident. Every day they come face-to-face with gruesome pain and suffering to care for us during the most traumatic moments of our lives.”
She concluded her statement by calling the entire ordeal “unfathomable”:
“It is unfathomable to me that someone would drive their car into our neighbors charged with healing.”
So heartbreaking…
Philadelphia Police are on the case. They believe the driver to be a man in his 20s. They also suspect the shooting happened within 10 minutes of the hospital. By Saturday night, law enforcement located the Jeep, according to WPVI, and had it towed as they continue to investigate. It was reportedly a rental which had been missing since August. We imagine they’ll have the driver soon enough…
We just can’t imagine just going in for a regular shift at work and ending up a victim to such recklessness. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.
