In case you hadn’t heard the heartbreaking news, director Lynn Shelton passed away on Saturday at the far too young age of 54 years old.
The indie darling director of Humpday and Your Sister’s Sister, who had recently done some acclaimed TV work directing episodes of GLOW, New Girl, The Mindy Project, The Morning Show, and Little Fires Everywhere, reportedly collapsed on Friday after having been sick for a week — not from the coronavirus but from a previously undiagnosed blood disorder.
Right away the news hit Hollywood hard, with basically everyone she had worked with taking a moment to mourn her passing and express just how special she was:
I’m so devastated to hear about Lynn Shelton’s passing yesterday. I’m in complete shock that this vibrant, talented, and soulful filmmaker is no longer with us. Lynn was so passionate about our show, Little Fires Everywhere. pic.twitter.com/E8s4dozfDO

We lost our dear friend Lynn Shelton. We made so many things together. I wish we had made more. Her boundless creative energy and infectious spirit were unrivaled. She made me better. We butted heads, made up, laughed, pushed each other. Like family. What a deep loss. pic.twitter.com/LcowmbGqum

Lynn Shelton loved actors and we loved her back. She was a dream on set. Her lovely, sunny energy was infectious and actors always drifted to video village between takes to be around her. She had such a quiet power and I will miss her. Rest In Peace, Lynn. Love you. pic.twitter.com/jGvbSV3fN1

But for one of her colleagues the loss was far more personal.
Lynn had been dating Marc Maron for the past few years, having met him in 2015 while doing his popular podcast WTF. She went on to direct him in GLOW and in the feature film Sword of Trust. Their relationship on and off set was the most successful of Maron’s life, as he revealed while addressing her passing on a new episode of his famously self-examining podcast:
“She was my partner. She was my girlfriend. She was my friend. And I loved her. A lot. And she loved me, and I knew that. I don’t know that I had ever felt what I felt with her before. I do know, actually. I did not. I have not. I was getting used to love in the way of being able to accept it and show it properly in an intimate relationship… I was so comfortable with this person, with Lynn Shelton. And I’m not really that comfortable emotionally or otherwise, but I was able to exist in a place of self-acceptance because of her love for me. I made her laugh all the time. She made me laugh. We were happy.””
Marc then spoke about his partner’s passing, fighting through tears as he recalled how she got sick last week, got back her negative COVID-19 test, and continued to have a scary high fever. And then on Friday…
“In the middle of the night I heard her collapse in the hallway on her way to the bathroom and I got up and she was on the floor and she couldn’t move. She was conscious but delirious a bit. I called 9-1-1, they came and got her, and that was the last time I saw her alive was on the floor being taken away.”
So unimaginably crushing. We can’t believe Maron was able to get through speaking about that.
The podcaster finished by saying about his late love:
“She was an amazing woman. She was an inspiration to some people. so many people loved her, she was a very determined artist who just needed to put her expression out into the world in any way. Tremendous love for people, for her friends, for her son, Milo. My relationship with her, I can’t even explain it. But I gotta tell you, nobody’s got anything bad to say about Lynn Shelton, that’s for f**king sure. She was amazing, her movies were amazing, they are amazing. Everyone who’s worked with her loved her.”
That’s definitely true.
Maron then included the episode from 2015, the first time he met his future partner. Listen to the full WTF tribute to Lynn (below):
