Margaret Cho got really real on Thursday night during a Twitter conversation about her former life as a sex worker.
In a heartbreaking interview with Billboard Magazine last month, the comedienne revealed she was sexually abused as a child and bullied by her classmates. Between the ages of five and 12, the 46-year-old said she was molested by a close family friend — and then again later throughout her teenage years.

In the series of tweets this week, Cho defended her past working in the sex industry:
“Sex work is simply work. For me it was honest work. I was a sex worker when I was young. It was hard but well paid. There’s no shame in it.
The outspoken comic — who filed for divorce from her husband of 11 years in August — was asked by a fan if her experience as a sex worker made it difficult to be in relationships, to which she responded:
I don’t believe so. I think being molested as a child had more to do with that. But as a sex worker I had power+$$$ https://t.co/KRvKI2e1Zx

The San Francisco native continued by saying she did what she needed to do to make money at the time, but she doesn’t have any regrets:
I have way more PTSD from rape. That’s real. Sex work was just a good way to make money. At least for me then. https://t.co/bPP2MRB911

I support sex workers because I was one and I know that it’s a job that’s needlessly shunned by society when frankly we should be worshipped

I know. And that’s terrible. I was not exploited and I don’t know girls or women who were. We were tough and proud. https://t.co/fVDr59c9B2

It’s true. We’re way more powerless as kids. I found my strength as a sex worker and gained a lot of power as I grew https://t.co/CsETIS4BUn

Sex workers are glorified in the Bible!Mary Magdalene was a whore and Jesus loved her. The Bible has been turned against us by jealous men.

That’s right. It’s sickening that they drag us into their own suffering. We give them so much. It’s their shame. https://t.co/i9Gt4DDrQa

For someone who has experienced so much hardship, we commend Cho for being proud of her past and engaging in conversation with her followers.
