**SPOILER WARNING** Margaret Qualley did an incredible job in The Substance — but making that movie gave her more than a Golden Globes nomination!
During Monday’s episode of Josh Horowitz‘s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 30-year-old actress revealed that the prosthetics from the movie gave her terrible acne! So bad, in fact, that near the end of filming they stopped showing her face! WHAT?! She said:
“Like, at the end, when they’re shooting up my skirt in the beginning credits, and it’s like the palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, that’s just because my face was so f**ked up by that time that they couldn’t, like, shoot my face anymore.”
OMG!
Those who have seen the movie know there are some WILD makeup effects all over her body, especially as the body horror flick goes on.

That’s not all, though. She said it took A YEAR for her acne to clear up — meaning she started filming her next movie, Kinds of Kindness, with her skin still messed up. In fact, one of her characters (she plays three in the movie) has acne, which Margaret said wasn’t an artistic choice and wasn’t makeup. It was her real skin at that time:
“So, you know the character that has all that acne? That was just my acne from the prosthetics. And I was like, ‘Oh this is kind of perfect. I’m playing all these different characters — for one of them we’ll use all my crazy prosthetic acne.’ It took me probably a year to recover physically from all of it.”
Ha! At least she got some use out of it, we suppose.
