Matthew Perry’s Stepfather & Sister Speak Out About Star’s ‘Incredibly Shocking’ Death One Year Later

Matthew Perry’s sister and stepfather are finally speaking out about his “shattering” death.

It’s difficult to believe just four days from now will mark the one-year anniversary of the Friends star’s tragic passing. He’s gone but certainly not forgotten. His younger sister Caitlin Morrison and his stepfather Keith Morrison are making sure of that.

On Wednesday, the father and daughter reflected on Matthew’s legacy a year after his death. In conversation with Hello! Canada, Keith, who you may know from his years on Dateline, of course, told the outlet:

“When [Matthew] suddenly died, it was incredibly shocking… anybody who has lost a child will tell you that, even if you are in some way prepared for the possibility, it’s shattering. What we have decided to do is hang on to that determination and try to do something useful.”

As we know, Matthew battled drug addiction for decades — but was passionate about helping others going through the same thing. And less than a week after his death, his family launched the Matthew Perry Foundation to help those struggling with addiction. Keith added:

“He would like to be remembered for doing something to help people suffering from addiction.”

Matthew’s younger sister Caitlin is currently the executive director for the foundation. While it’s difficult to go through life without her big brother, she says working for the cause makes her feel connected to him:

“The work that I’m doing now is very selfish because it kind of feels like I’m sitting right next to Matthew, working with him every day on something that was important to him. I have this treasure of getting to keep him very, very close to my life all the time which is wonderful.”

Awww! That’s so sweet. We’re so glad she feels that way AND is helping people. Reflecting on the late Fools Rush In star’s natural charisma, she added:

“He had this ability to fill up a room with light. When people were in a room with [Matthew], there was this magnetic energy. Everybody just had a smile on their face and they clung to everything that he said.”

So, so very true.

On Thursday, Keith opened up more about his stepson’s legacy during an interview on the Q with Tom Power podcast, which you can watch (below):
