Well, well, well… looks like there’s a brand-new chapter unfolding in the ever-dramatic saga surrounding Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle — and this one has romance, controversy, and a headline-making age gap!
The 81-year-old father of the Duchess of Sussex is making waves after revealing he’s found love again following a series of serious health scares. And not just any love; we’re talking about a much younger woman… who just so happens to have also been his nurse.
Yes, really! Her name is Rio Canedo, she’s 46, and their connection reportedly blossomed while Thomas was recovering from leg amputation surgery in the Philippines.

And before you roll your eyes, Thomas is clearly feeling himself again. He told DailyMail.com all about it:
“I never expected to find joy and happiness again at my age. I felt neglected and sad for so many years but now I am enjoying life again. After so many tough times I feel truly blessed to have found someone very special who takes such good care of me.”
Cue the collective gasp! After years of public family tension, health struggles, and emotional ups and downs, Thomas is now living in Cebu with his son and embracing what he calls a gentler way of life… and, uh, apparently, a second shot at romance.
Of course, he’s not naive about how this looks. A man in his eighties dating a woman nearly half his age? People are going to talk. But Thomas insists he couldn’t care less:
“I know some people will say hurtful things but I don’t care. I want to talk about this because I never thought I would ever be happy again. I want people to know you’re never too old to find peace and love.”
And if you thought he’d stop there, think again. He doubled down with some seriously bold words:
“The haters will hate. … There’s a lot of negative things going on in the world and if my story can give a little hope to one person then I’m happy. But, to be honest, I don’t give a damn. Life is for living. There’s nothing more important in life than love.”
Honestly? That’s… surprisingly heartfelt.
This all comes after a frightening period late last year when Thomas was hospitalized and even admitted to intensive care. Things were clearly looking bleak for a while, which makes this sudden romantic twist feel even more dramatic. According to him, the move overseas was about more than just health — it was about peace:
“After my stroke things were not great. I wanted to go to the other side of the world to a place where the people are kind. The Philippines have a gentler way of life. I never expected to meet Rio and have my life changed in such a wonderful way. I finally feel safe and well-cared for.”
And Rio is apparently not just a girlfriend, but a full-on caretaker, helping him stick to a strict no-sugar diet and encouraging healthier habits as he battles pneumonia. Thomas even admitted:
“I’ve got pneumonia but I’m not feeling sorry for myself because I have Rio taking such good care of me.”
As for his famously fractured relationship with Meghan? It sounds like he’s finally letting go of that pain… or at least trying to. He explained:
“I hardly watch the news. I live in a world where people are kind to each other. The nurses and doctors here in the Philippines are wonderful. People here don’t have all the worldly goods we have in the West but they respect and care for older people. There are young trainee nurses here who we call the ‘munchkins’ and all I hear all day long are peels of laughter. I was sad about Meghan for so long but now I finally feel like I can laugh again. Life is good.”
Wow. From estrangement and illness to laughter and love, this is one twist we didn’t see coming.
