How Meghan Markle Possibly Being There For Prince Harry's Reunion With King Charles 'Changes The Stakes'

Could a long-awaited royal reunion be even more significant than anyone expected?

That’s the question swirling around Prince Harry‘s reported plans to reconnect with King Charles III, especially amid speculation that Meghan Markle could be by his side if the meeting happens.

According to Page Six on Friday, royal commentator Amanda Matta believes Meghan’s potential involvement would carry far more meaning than simply attending another family gathering.

Matta explained:

“Meghan’s presence would certainly add symbolic weight to any reunion. If Meghan accompanies Harry to the UK or to a meeting with his family, it would signal to the public that any effort at rebuilding relationships extends to the Sussex family as a whole.”

That’s a major point considering how much attention has surrounded the ongoing rift between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the rest of the royal family over the last several years. While Meghan’s attendance has not been confirmed, the possibility alone has reignited speculation about whether genuine progress could finally be made behind palace doors.

Still, Matta doesn’t believe Meghan herself is the deciding factor in whether reconciliation succeeds. As she put it:

“It just changes the stakes. The challenge in reconciling has never really been about any one person; it has been rebuilding trust across the board.”

That trust has certainly been tested. Since Harry and Meghan stepped away from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California, the couple has spoken openly about their experiences within the monarchy through interviews, documentaries, and Harry’s memoir, Spare. And those revelations created lasting tensions that continue to shape perceptions of the family!

Even so, Matta suggested Meghan’s dynamic with King Charles has always been somewhat separate from Harry’s relationship with his father. She noted:

“Historically, there have been indications that Charles made efforts to welcome her into the family, but she has taken a step back in recent years. I see that as an acknowledgment that the Sussexes’ ongoing tensions with the royals actually stem from Harry and his own family.”

She continued by emphasizing that Harry’s frustrations predated his marriage, saying:

“The issues he has raised, of press intrusion and an emotionally stifling palace environment, existed and were eating away at Harry before he even met Meghan.”

Meanwhile, reports continue to suggest that Harry is eager for his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to spend time with their grandfather during an upcoming trip to the United Kingdom. Page Six reported that Harry “desperately wants” his children to reconnect with the monarch.

And, as we’ve previously noted, Charles has reportedly offered the Sussex family accommodations at a royal residence and even proposed handling logistical arrangements — no small sign of good faith, ya know?!

Whether all of that comes together remains to be seen. Meghan has not returned to the UK since attending Queen Elizabeth II‘s funeral in September 2022, which would thus make any future appearance especially noteworthy.

Matta also believes the public conversation surrounding Harry and Meghan has evolved considerably since the couple last appeared publicly alongside Prince William and Princess Catherine in 2022. She explained:

“The public generally understands that this relationship is incredibly complicated, but they also know more than ever about the way the monarchy operates. The greatest risk, in my opinion, comes from how the palace manages this ‘return.’”

In other words, the optics could matter just as much as the reunion itself.

If reports of reconciliation are followed by fresh stories of conflict, Matta warns that the royal family could find itself facing another public relations headache. As she concluded:

“If the public sees mixed signals, like suggestions of reconciliation alongside reports of ongoing or renewed tension, it would reinforce the impression that the royal family is still navigating unresolved issues behind the scenes — that they can’t get their act together, in other words.”

For now, royal watchers will have to wait and see whether this anticipated family meeting actually happens — and whether Meghan ultimately joins Harry for any Charles summit.

If she does, it could become one of the most closely analyzed royal appearances in years!
