Following in her late mother’s footsteps, Melissa Rivers just wants to have a little fun on the red carpet!
On Monday night’s Fashion Police coverage of the Golden Globes, the 47-year-old joked about those wanting to make the red carpet more serious with new campaigns like #AskHerMore fronted by Reese Witherspoon and Amy Poehler‘s #SmartGirlsAsk.

In fact, she revealed:
“As someone who is simply just very shallow, [and] who was part of the original ‘who are you wearing?’, really they are all nervous, they are all excited, they really don’t want to discuss serious topics.”
Melissa also put her point into perspective, adding:
“I know there is the whole movement to ask her something serious, but it is not the appropriate place for it. I’m not going to ask you about your feelings on world hunger in the 30 seconds I have with you on the carpet where you also have to say who is paying you to wear it and get you plug out├óΓé¼┬ª Lets be honest, the red carpet is not the place for depth. It is fun.”
Of course designers are expecting to get their name out there, which is why they’re dressing these stars for free, but to be fair, the point is just to ask her more.
But we can also see how she might not want to give up on what her mother, Joan Rivers, started.
Leading up to the Globes, Reese gave some examples to promote her campaign:
How old were you when you realized you were a storyteller? #AskHerMore #SmartGirlsAsk

You inspire so many people with your performances. What woman inspires you? #AskHerMore #SmartGirlsAsk

Though Giuliana Rancic also chimed in on the episode, saying:
“I think fashion is fun, there are bigger problems in this world and [I] think celebrities get that.”
Way to play it neutral, G!
But in the end, Miz Rivers shared:
“People are really invested in the show, celebrities are really invested in the show and, what surprises me, is designers are really invested emotionally in the show. And I think everyone has finally taken a deep breath and realized it’s fun and we’re always hammering home fashion is fun. It is an art that is meant to be enjoyed and fun.”
Even defending the reporters covering the event, the brunette starlet also dished:
“And if they do not like your outfit, everything will be alright. When you’re making $20 million a year and you’re given dresses and jewelry, and many of them are now being paid to wear dresses and jewelry, and we don’t like one of the free dresses of the 25 we have seen you this awards season, really, you are going to be okay. Go wear another free gown to the bank.”
Dannnnng!
“As my mother used to say ‘All we are saying is what people are saying to their friends at home, except we say it in a funnier way.'”
Would U rather hear your fave stars speaking more on what matters to them, or about their fashion??
