Michael Phelps Loses His Funding & Gets A BIG TIME Suspension Following His Second DUI! Could Face A Year In Jail!

Whoa! This is a huge hit! And we’re not talking about the kind from a bong!
Michael Phelps recently announced that he’s planning to go rehab, following his second DUI arrest, but he’s still feeling the punishment from it!
USA Swimming announced on Monday that they are suspending him for six months AND he can’t compete in the world championships.
Oh, and he lost six months worth of funding too, which comes out to $10,500.
USA Swimming executive director, Chuck Wielgus, said:

“Michael’s conduct was serious and required significant consequences. We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions.”

So, while Phelps can’t compete in the world championship (which is the biggest swimming competition leading up to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics), he can still practice with his North Baltimore club.

Though, he’ll be at a six-week inpatient rehab clinic first.
Back in 2009, Phelps was suspended for three months for a picture of him smoking marijuana, and he didn’t face any punishment for his DUI when he was 19 years old, making this his biggest punishment yet.
As for the legal side of things, the Olympian is going to trial on November 19th, and could get up to a year in jail, a $1,000 fine, and could possibly lose his driver’s license for six months.
If you’re thinking this sounds a little a lenient for a guy who was driving with almost two times the legal limit of alcohol in his system, it’s because he’s being charged as a first time offender. When he was 19, Phelps pled out, and the judge waived the conviction.
We’d say he’s pretty lucky this time around!
