Michelle Williams Says Living With Ryan Gosling Was 'Horrible' -- But There's A Good Reason!

Michelle Williams is opening up about her history with Ryan Gosling.

15 years ago, the pair starred in the critically acclaimed drama Blue Valentine which ultimately earned Michelle an Academy Award nomination. And it sounds like all the recognition was a direct reflection of how much she and Ryan truly dedicated themselves to their characters. And if you’ve seen the movie, you know that was a rough time!

If you haven’t, the film tells the tale of lovers Cindy and Dean as they navigate life from courtship to the destruction of their marriage. And while the loved-up scenes may have been a breeze to film, Michelle and Ryan really had to dig deep and really hurt each other to believably play two people getting divorced.

On Monday, Michelle appeared on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, where she revealed she and Ryan temporarily “lived together” to identify their triggers:

“We shot the first part when they’re young and in love and everything’s going really great, then we took a two-week break and we lived together. Office hours, baby, like 9 to 5.”

OMG, what a method experiment! She continued:

“So we did these improvisations during the day, honestly to figure out ways to annoy each other and to destroy this thing that we had made. Because we weren’t even going to take that break but we were having such a hard time letting go of the thing that we loved.”

Wow!

The now-44-year-old went on:

“[Director] Derek Cianfrance was like, ‘We gotta mess this up and we need to burn it down.’ And we did a ceremonial [burning of] our wedding photo and then we learned how to annoy each other.”

That’s CRAZY! So much dedication!

The Dying for Sex star revealed she and Ryan were typically alone during their improv sessions, but that Cianfrance would issue them scenarios to work off of:

“Derek the director would come in and give us a kind of scenario and then we would be left to do it.”

On the dynamic, Michelle confessed it was “horrible” because she “didn’t want to give [Ryan] reasons to hate [her]” — especially after just meeting him mere months prior. And on top of that, she added she “really was” feeling the heartbreak in that second leg of shooting. You can hear her talk more about it (below):
