The U.S. is the land of the free, and the home of the brave — and schools SERIOUSLY need to stop hatin’ on how girls look and dress!
Haven Middle School in Evanston, Illinois has a new dress code that is infuriating its female students and their parents! And with good reason!
School officials issued a notification that essentially bans all of their female students from wearing shorts, leggings, or yoga pants because they’ve deemed those articles of clothing “too distracting” for the male students!
Obviously the girls at the school are NOT happy with the dress code, and find it absolutely sexist!
Luckily, their parents are taking their daughters’ side!
Here’s what some of the parents wrote in a joint post:
“This kind of message lands itself squarely on a continuum that blames girls and women for assault by men. It also sends the message to boys that their behaviors are excusable, or understandable given what the girls are wearing. We really hope that you will consider the impact of these policies and how they contribute to rape culture.”
One wicked smart 13-year-old named Sophie Hasty made a sound argument when she said:
“Not being able to wear leggings because it’s ‘too distracting for boys’ is giving us the impression we should be guilty for what guys do. We just want to be comfortable!”
In fact, some of the students have created a brilliant poster that reads “Are my pants lowering your test scores?” to fight against this policy!
Haven Middle School hasn’t made its final decision yet though, and with a petition of over 500 signatures that side with the students who are outraged by this dress policy, we hope they decide against this “code”.
Unless you’re a school that demands a uniform that’s rigid and equal for both boys and girls, we see no problem with girls wearing clothes like this!
