Breaking barriers!
In case you missed it, Mikayla Holmgren made history on Sunday night as the first woman with Down Syndrome to compete for the Miss Minnesota USA crown. She won the Spirit of Miss USA Award and Director’s Award.

The 22-year-old college student told People of her decision to enter the competition:
“I said, ├óΓé¼╦£I want to do this.’ I want to show my personality. I want to show what my life looks like, being happy, and joyful. I want to show what Down Syndrome looks like.”

Denise Wallace, executive co-director of the pageant, said of Holmgren’s amazing spirit:
“Mikayla is such an incredible and accomplished young woman. We feel she definitely has what it takes to compete at the Miss Minnesota USA pageant this fall in that she is the epitome of what the Miss Universe Organization strives to look for in contestants ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ someone who is confidently beautiful.”
And understandably, Holmgren is “very proud” of herself as a trailblazer for women with Down Syndrome:
“That means my life is changing because of the pageant. I’m very proud of myself. It’s a new thing in my life. I’m going to blaze the trail!”
