Don’t let the title confuse you! Sitting around and tweeting all day, WILL NOT lead to weight loss! Ha!
Last may, Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri took a long, hard look in the mirror and decided it was time to lose weight. To announce her big change, she took to Twitter and shared with her fans:
“I’m tired of looking and feeling fat. Maybe talking about it publicly will keep me on track as I try to be more disciplined. Off to the gym.├óΓé¼┬¥
As it turns out, talking about it publicly with her 59,000 followers DID help her stay on track! 5 months later, the senator tweeted:
├óΓé¼┼ôGOOAALLLLLLLL!! I did it! Lost 50 lbs. Thank you Team Charles and my new BFF… Mr Treadmill. Healthy food and lots of exercise.├óΓé¼┬¥
While diet and exercise is essential to lose weight, most people forget to utilize an “accountability” factor.
By sharing her goals with the public, Sen. McCaskill remained motivated to reach her goal in fear of disappointing not only herself, but the thousands who were following her progress online.
The democratic senator’s personal trainer, Charles D’Angelo, explained the power of accountability, saying:
├óΓé¼┼ôOf course there is the diet and exercise component. What every program is missing is what holds it all together. It├óΓé¼Γäós like a stool – one being exercise, the other being diet. It├óΓé¼Γäós missing the third leg to keep the stool balanced. You have to hold yourself accountable. Claire used social media to keep herself publicly accountable.├óΓé¼┬¥
The trainer adds that his busy client’s inspiring weight loss proves the myth that some people are “too busy to exercise” is false, continuing:
├óΓé¼┼ôWe all have the same number of hours in the day. What I decide to do with those will bring about a result and consequence. That consequence can be a positive or negative consequence.”
You don’t need 59,000 people monitoring your progress to approach your own weight loss goals in a similar fashion either. Use your Facebook friends, actual friends, co-workers and family for support!
Don’t be afraid to declare your desire for a new and improved you to the world!
