The Queen of Soul will never be forgotten…
MTV and the VMAs paid tribute to late legend Aretha Franklin on Monday with a bizarre tribute.
It started with an old clip of Aretha belting it out, before Madonna graced the stage and shared what at first sounded like an inspiring story about how Aretha impacted (and changed!) Madonna’s entire career trajectory.
Great!!
But as she continued, it became an, uh, interesting story much more about Madonna and much less about Aretha — immediately after which, Madge transitioned awkwardly and presented the Video of the Year nominees and winner.
Look at all the somewhat confused reactions (below) about Madonna’s tribute to Aretha that turned out to be a long story all about Madonna…!

Madonna made Aretha Franklin's death about herself and her own musical journey, and honestly, this is some of the whitest shit I have ever seen. #VMAs

Is this a tribute to Aretha Franklin or Madonna's story #VMAs pic.twitter.com/SF8j7Ycu8w

What a touching tribute to Aretha Franklin where Madonna talked about her goddam self for like 30 mins

Madonna REALLY went out there in her best cultural appropriation outfit to talk about Queen Aretha Franklin?
IS THIS REAL LIFE?!?!?!? #VMAS pic.twitter.com/07tA07UoAd

So MTV had Madonna talk about Michael Jackson when he died and she made it about her. Now when it's "about" Aretha Franklin she made it about herself. I'm tired of this #VMAs pic.twitter.com/1CZHT7OdvI

Madonna out here talking about getting robbed at a crack house, french producers who didn't think she was any good and losing a shoe during a performance. Nothing to do with Aretha Franklin lol

But wait…
Maybe there’s a reason for all this?! Here’s a hell of a conspiracy theory from a few days ago (below):

Ha!!! Love it!!
P.S. Congrats to Camila Cabello for winning Video of the Year and receiving the award from Madonna!
