It’s now been over six months since Nancy Guthrie went missing, and new insight into the botched investigation is being revealed.
A new Wall Street Journal report out on Saturday claims that the Pima County Sheriff’s deputies massively screwed up in the early days of the missing persons case by ignoring critical evidence! Allegedly, officers paid little attention to dried blood on the 84-year-old’s front porch. Apparently, they thought it could’ve come from an unrelated head bump or nosebleed.
HUH?!?
They knew a beloved elder was missing, saw blood at her doorstep, and just… didn’t think it mattered? What the heck!
After testing confirmed it was Nancy’s blood, authorities now believe it was connected to the kidnapping. No s**t!
Similarly, the outlet notes that the investigators wasted critical time in the case debating whether this was a kidnapping or a routine missing person situation. And in doing so, as we all know, they also failed to tape off the Tucson property immediately, allowing for all kinds of people to walk around the residence and tamper with the crime scene.

Furthermore, the outlet reported that the department’s $1.7 million surveillance plane wasn’t put into action until around 6:30 p.m. on the day Nancy was discovered missing — when it was dark, and the capabilities of the zoom camera were limited. This was allegedly due to a failure to find a deputy qualified to operate the aircraft’s camera system. Ugh.
You can’t help but wonder what could’ve changed had all these mistakes not occurred…
Chris Nanos hit back at the WSJ‘s findings, insisting the case is still active. Meanwhile, the FBI told the outlet that the Pima County Sheriff’s Department has always been in charge of the investigation and even confirmed that some requests for federal help came late into the case.
