Put down the poppy seeds before your next drug test!
One mother was kept away from her son on his first day of life after failing a urine drug test after she ate a poppy seed bagel.

Elizbeth Dominguez shared her shock after testing positive for opiates when she went to the hospital to deliver her son Carter James:

“I did a urine test and it came back that I tested positive for opiates. I called my husband freaking out saying, ‘How is this possible? I don’t do drugs. I don’t even take Tylenol — what do you mean?'”

The 29-year-old explained her panic to WKBW:

“I told the lab, I told the hospital, I told everyone, ‘Retest me. Take my blood. Do whatever you have to do, because this isn’t right.'”

After giving birth, both she and the newborn were tested for opiates, and though the test was negative, Child Protective Services prevented her from taking her son home:

“CPS shows up in my room, asking me all sorts of questions like, ‘if we are to take your kids and your baby away from you, where would you like them to go?'”

The Tonawanda, New York mom explained that she was discharged soon after from the hospital, though CPS made her leave her son behind for monitoring for 24 hours:

“I felt absolutely horrible. I felt like a terrible mother leaving him.”

This sounds like a total nightmare!

She heeded a word of caution to any other mommas-to-be who could potentially wind up in the same situation:

“I just want everyone to know that this could happen. It’s such a terrible thing and I don’t want it to happen to anyone.”

If you’re a fan of Seinfeld, you may remember that Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ character Elaine Benes found herself in a similar false-positive situation when she tested positive for opiates because of her favorite poppy seed muffins:

But can this really happen?
Dr. Michelle Rainka, a clinical pharmacist, shared with the news station that anyone taking a drug test should be aware of what could happen by eating poppy seeds ahead of time:

“In some cases, eating a large amount of poppy seed such as the kind found in a bagel has been shown to produce low levels of morphine and codeine in the urine. Anywhere from one to three bagels with poppy seeds can produce positive tests on a urine toxicology.”

Be careful out there, bagel lovers!!
