Nick Offerman and the Parks and Recreation crew are mourning Jonathan Joss.
In the wake of the late actor’s tragic murder, Jonathan’s former co-stars are remembering him fondly. If you ever watched the hit NBC comedy, you may remember the recurring character Chief Ken Hotate. He was always a gem on screen — just take a look at some of his most memorable moments (below):
He never failed to make us laugh! And it sounds like he left quite the mark on the rest of the show’s cast IRL, too.

On Monday, Nick Offerman, who memorably played Ron Swanson in the acclaimed show, told People he and the cast have gotten in touch after learning about Jonathan’s death:
“The cast has been texting together about it all day and we’re just heartbroken. Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.”
Awww. The cast includes big names like Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, Chris Pratt, and more. Truly a tragedy in every sense of the word…
The late 59-year-old was violently gunned down on Sunday on his San Antonio, Texas property. He reportedly got into a spat with a neighbor which culminated in the deadly fire. Jonathan’s husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales has since claimed the shooter Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, who was arrested and charged with murder, was hurling homophobic slurs their way. You can read his full statement (below):
Just so incredibly upsetting…
FWIW, Nick is a fearless ally of the LGBTQIA+ community… Both on screen and IRL. In 2023, he played gay character Bill in The Last of Us during that unforgettably gutting third episode. And in Parks and Recreation, his character Ron once served as best man at a gay wedding… Which he reminded one homophobic fan of on X (Twitter) on Monday!
A hateful user shared an edited gif of Ron throwing a Pride flag in the garbage — which Ron would have NEVER done — and wrote, “Just wanted to post how I feel about ‘pride’ month.” And Nick quickly corrected the bigot:
“Ron was best man at a gay wedding you dumb f**k. #HappyPride”
Tell ‘em!
When violence and DEATH is still regularly being brought upon queer folk, people like Nick’s voices are more important than ever. Our hearts remain with Jonathan’s loved ones during this terrible time. Rest in peace.
