Nick Reiner 'Didn't Take' Parents' 'Help Seriously' -- How His Personality Made It More Challenging

Rob and Michele Reiner did everything they could to help their son before their murders…

As we’ve reported, Nick Reiner struggled with his mental health and drug addiction for a long time. He checked into rehab for the first time at 15 years old and had been in and out of treatment over 18 times by the age of 22. And through the difficult time, Rob and Michele tried to stand by his side. A source told People on Friday that the “loving” parents “tried so hard already for years” to help Nick. However, he simply refused to take it. Another insider added:

“At the end of the day, Nick didn’t take the help seriously. This was true for years and years. His issues were far, far out of his parents’ control.”

And his personality supposedly made it even more challenging for Rob and Michele. The source explained:

“Nick lied a lot. He was unreliable, but he was also convincing and intelligent.”

No matter how bad it got, though, the source said his family never gave up on Nick:

“His family was empathetic to how much his struggles contributed to his behavior. They never lost hope in him, even when he was scaring them or making their lives harder.”

Rob and Michele clearly loved and cared for Nick so much. That’s what makes this whole tragedy so devastating. One insider close to the family also said the couple just “could never reach stability with Nick” and that “they tried everything — giving him space, keeping him close — but his struggles are so deep.” The source continued:

“It’s just a parent’s worst nightmare. They were such lovely people and tried in every way to help their son.”

Oof…

Just three months before the 32-year-old screenwriter allegedly killed Rob and Michele, the When Harry Met Sally director said Nick “hasn’t been doing drugs for over six years” and that “he’s in a really good place.” However, things may have changed shortly afterward. An insider for TMZ revealed this week that Nick was diagnosed with schizophrenia and changes to his medication in the weeks before the murders made him more “erratic and dangerous.” His medical team reportedly hoped the adjustment to his meds would help stabilize him, but it unfortunately had the opposite effect. And here we are now, sadly mourning the loss of Rob and Michele. Just awful.
