Latoya Harris’ 9-year-old daughter got into a fight last April with two other girls outside a Boys & Girls club in Portland.
When the mother of one of the girls called the cops, she demanded Harris’ daughter be arrested for punching her kid in the face.
Two officers questioned the little girl about the incident and a week later arrested her on a fourth-degree assault charge. They literally came to her house, handcuffed her while she was in her bathing suit, and hauled her off to jail.
Worst part? Her momma wasn’t allowed to ride in the cop car with her daughter!
Harris said:
“When they put handcuffs on, I thought, ‘Wait a minute, this has got to be a joke.’ The look on my daughter’s face went from humiliation and fear, to a look of sheer panic.”
Her child spent an hour in an adult holding cell, waiting for her mother to take a bus to the police station.
So now, a year later, Harris is planning to sue the cops for traumatizing her daughter.
She went to the Citizen Review Committee, a panel that hears complains of police misconduct.
Ever since her daughter was taken into custody alone, finger printed and photographed wearing only a wet bathing suit, she’s not the same little girl she once was. She’s had to switch schools because of teasing and has been in counseling since the incident.
It’s ridiculous that a 9-year-old had to be cuffed. We hope they change their policies regarding juveniles and that poor little girl gets some form of compensation for her trouble.
Lots of money and a formal apology would be a nice start!
Check out the video (below) to hear her mother speak out against these awful cops.
At least maybe she also learned her lesson?? Seems like a poor excuse to do this to a child!
