It’s been recently reported that the Trayvon Martin shooting case will NOT be brought to a grand jury.
A statement from Angela Corey’s office, the special prosecutor for the case, reads:
“From the moment she was assigned, Ms. Corey noted she may not need a grand jury. The decision should not be considered a factor in the final determination of the case. At this time, the investigation continues and there will be no further comment from this office.”
A grand jury was set to meet tomorrow, until Corey made her decision today.
In Florida, the only murder cases requiring a grand jury are those of first-degree and Corey has “a reputation for not presenting cases before grand juries if it wasn’t required.”
Maybe she feels she has enough evidence to bring charges already??
Ben Crump, the lawyer for Trayvon’s family, said:
“We had hoped she had enough evidence without the need to convene a grand jury. The family is trying to have patience and faith through all of this. We know we want that day to come. We want a very public trial so the evidence can come out and show people that the justice system works for everybody.”
We sure hope that’s what happens, too.
Though no grand jury will be used, George Zimmerman, Trayvon’s shooter, could still be arrested as early as this week.
We wish the Martin family the best during this extremely difficult time.
