What a find!
Archaeologists for the Museum of London announced on Wednesday that they’ve found the remains of the theatre where Shakespeare‘s early plays were first performed.
The museum found the theatre remains in the trendy Shoreditch area of London.
The source explains that Shakespeare appeared at The Theatre in Shoreditch, east London, as an actor with a troupe called The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, which also performed his efforts as a playwright there.
Some of the early Shakespeare plays performed by the troupe in Shoreditch include Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
After a tenancy dispute in 1599, the owners of The Theatre dismantled it during the night and its timbers were used to construct the Globe Theatre by the River Thames which became the home of Shakespeare’s plays.
Ironically, the discovery was made on a site being prepared for the construction of a new theatre.
The theater gods are smiling upon us!
“It’s a theatre that’s been known about for a long time but no remains have ever been found. This is the theatre that the company of players that Shakespeare was part of first performed in and when he started writing, the company would have performed his plays,” said a museum spokesman.
The remains will reportedly be kept in place as the new theatre is built.
Looks like there’ll be another thing for tourists in London to see!
