Orlando’s City Clerk Office expects to see a rush of same sex couples next month when a new domestic partnership registry goes into effect.
Orlando became the first city in Central Florida to recognize same sex couples. All 16 appointments for the registry’s opening day have already been booked.
While the registry doesn’t offer the full benefits of a civil union or marriage, couples will be able to have hospital visitation rights, health care decision making privileges and funeral arrangement rights.
Commissioner Patty Sheehan stated “it’s not as many rights as marriage, but it helps couples during very difficult times.” Sheehan is expected to sign the registry with her partner Jocelynn White.
We’re glad to see cities move one step closer to equality. Yay Orlando!
