Oscar De La Hoya has had issues with substance abuse in the past, and it looks like it’s a battle he’s still facing today.
The iconic boxer announced today that he would be checking himself into an undisclosed treatment facility.
The big news comes right on the heels of a huge fight this weekend between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Alvarez, which he says he won’t be able to attend.
Oscar release a statement saying:
“Canelo Alvarez and I have big fights coming up this weekend. His is the ring and mine in treatment. I will not be at the fight to cheer Canelo to victory since I have voluntarily admitted myself into a treatment facility. I explained this to Canelo and he understood that my health and long-term recovery from my disease must come first.”
This isn’t the first time Oscar has sought out treatment for his addiction, as he checked himself into rehab 2 years ago.
Oscar De La Hoya is without question one of the toughest fighters the sport has ever seen, and we hope he can find the same strength while taking on his battle with addiction.
