The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced Thursday morning, and in classic fashion, the flagship film award show has made a very small number of people very happy… and a TON more furious!
Obviously as usual we’re bummed to see horror get ignored, with all the amazing performances last year in Heretic, Immaculate, Longlegs, I Saw The TV Glow, Nosferatu, and more. But that’s no surprise.

The snubs this year feel somehow even more egregious than normal as some really beloved actresses have been left out in the cold! It kind of feels like the Academy decided when it comes to actresses, out with the old, in with the new! Oof! Let’s get into it!

Snub – Angelina Jolie!
This is a big one! Angelina Jolie is a past winner who gave what’s been hailed as a “career-defining performance” playing opera singer Maria Callas in Maria. It was seen as maybe a big screen comeback for Angie, who’s mostly been either behind the camera or just being a parent since the Brad Pitt divorce.
Seeing her miss out on the nod here is a real hit. Maybe the film was a bit underseen? Though frankly that’s never stopped Netflix from getting awards love before…
Snub – Nicole Kidman
Another highly talked about performance this year from a past winner. Nicole Kidman may have raised some eyebrows with her comments about the steamier scenes in Babygirl, but she also was getting tons of buzz, as per usual. But no gold. Ouch.
Snub – Pamela Anderson
This one hurts! Pamela Anderson has never been in the Oscar conversation before, but critics called her performance in The Last Showgirl “transformative.” It really changed the way people looked at the Baywatch alum. It’s the kind of comeback story the Academy used to LOVE!
So what happened? Well… Frankly we have to wonder if Demi Moore sucked all the air out of the room. She’s also seen as a ’90s star who had a big comeback in a role that’s changing how everyone looks at her. And don’t get us wrong, we’re thrilled to see the wild body horror masterpiece The Substance getting recognition, it’s just a shame there doesn’t seem to be room for TWO older actress comeback stories.
Snub – Selena Gomez
Emilia Pérez leads the Oscar noms with 14! One of the most nominated ever, the most for a film where English isn’t the main language spoken. And yet… nothing for Gretchen Weiners. Sorry, we mean Selena Gomez.
Yes, she may have be getting a little golden ring this year, but not a little golden man. Like with Pam Anderson and Demi Moore, we can’t help speculate maybe votes went to the other petite pop star in a nominated film — Ariana Grande. And speaking of Wicked…
Snub – Jon M. Chu
OK, so Wicked got 10 nominations total, tied for second most overall with The Brutalist… But the latter’s director got nominated, and Wicked‘s Jon M. Chu gets left out in the cold? Talk about the brutalest! Who do they think put this whole thing together??
You’re always going to have this problem with twice as many Best Picture nominations as Best Director. And we do love the Coralie Fargeat nomination, as it’s usually the female directors who get left out… but still… That’s gotta be wicked disappointing.
Snub – Challengers
What. The. Effing. Eff.
Not only did none of the three leads in Challengers get nods, when Zendaya was phenomenal in multiple projects this year, but also nothing for the directing, the cinematography, the editing, the brilliant screenplay… and most egregiously the score!
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have pumped out banger after banger since they started doing this, but the Challengers score has to go down as one of their most iconic. Maybe Academy voters just weren’t into how it was more club music than a traditional orchestral thing?
WOOF. Rough year! Who do U think deserved more Oscars love?
