Pete Davidson Recalls 'Testing The Waters' Of Physically Harming Himself: 'It Got Pretty Dark & Scary'

Pete Davidson opens up about his mental health scare from 2018

Pete Davidson is opening up about what was undoubtedly the most difficult time in his life.

The Saturday Night Live comedian is having a moment right now in his professional career, with his much-anticipated new biographical film The King Of Staten Island drawing quite a bit of nationwide attention. But while his work is taking off, he’s looking back at the tough times and revealing more about some of the challenges he’s faced to get to this point.

The 26-year-old sat down with CBS Sunday Morning this past week for a piece that aired on yesterday’s national show, and in it, he got VERY real about how close he came to harming himself during a particularly dark chapter back in December 2018.

As you’ll recall, the actor split from Ariana Grande in October of that year, abruptly ending the pair’s whirlwind romance and engagement. Two months later, Davidson took to Instagram and wrote that he didn’t “want to be on this earth any more,” quickly prompting a major response from friends, fans, and colleagues.

Now, Davidson is looking back on that tough period of time, admitting in the interview he was “testing the waters” of physically harming himself before eventually finding the right mix of treatments. He said:

“Until I met the right treatments and met the right doctors and did all the work that you need to do to, like, not feel that way, it got pretty dark and scary.”

Wow.

The SNL star even revealed how one particular scene in his upcoming movie — where he drives without a seatbelt while keeping his eyes closed, unaware and uncaring about what’s coming up ahead of him — is actually based on true events.

The Staten Island native admitted:

“That’s true. I used to do that. That’s horrible to say. But yeah, I used to close my eyes on a closed road, usually at night. And I would drive without a seatbelt.”

So, so scary…

The entire interview is interesting; not only does it cover Davidson’s recent mental health battles, but it also dives into his early career success in landing on Lorne Michaels‘ hit late-night show at just 20 years old. From the sound of it, Davidson struggled to fit in right from the beginning there:

“I was like 10, 12 years younger than everybody else. It felt like it was a joke. It felt, like, very Make-a-Wish-y. … I was really confident as a comic because like you have to be. On stage is where I feel my most comfortable, but off stage, I never really thought I was a great comic or anything like that. I’m very self-hating.”

No kidding…

Very revealing!
