Remember the 18-year-old girl who sued her parents because they refused to pay her college tuition??
Well it looks like Rachel Canning might have to start looking into student loans, as the court ended up ruling in favor or her mom and pops, saying they won’t have to pay a DIME for her school, her legal fees, or child support payments!
Judge Peter Bogaard spoke out about his decision, saying ruling in favor of Rachel could have potentially opened Pandora’s box:
“We have to ask ourselves, do we want to establish a precedent where parents live in constant fear of enforcing the basic rules of the house. If they set a rule a child doesn├óΓé¼Γäót like, the child can move out, move in with another family, seek child support, cars, cell phone and a few hundred grand to go to college. Are we going to open the gates for 12-year-olds to sue for an Xbox? For 13-year-olds to sue for an iPhone? We should be mindful of a potentially slippery slope.”
That’s actually a REALLY good point!
Just because Rachel doesn’t agree to her parents’ rules does NOT mean she’s entitled to money, and if she would have won this lawsuit, we have a feeling a LOT more cases like this would start popping up any time a child disagrees with their parents!
Besides, there are PLENTY of students out there who are able to make it through college with help from student loans, so we’re sure she’ll figure something out!
