Reducing Teens’ Salt Intake Could Save Health Care Costs

Salt is one of those things that we seem to always get too much of. It can even be detrimental as a teenager.

It turns out that reducing the amount of salt teens consume by 3 grams a day (1/2 a teaspoon or 1,200 milligrams) could lead to a 68% decrease in the number of teens with hypertension and also decrease the number of adults with heart conditions down the road.

“If you start with higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure numbers in your teens, you’ll likely have even higher numbers in your 20s and 30s.” said author of the study Dr. Kristin Bibbins-Domingo. “Your body gets accustomed to foods you eat, so the key is to set habits for healthy eating throughout your life.”

Um…why aren├óΓé¼Γäót we doing this yet?!! If you are a teen or have kids, start cutting salt! Half a teaspoon a day is nothing!
