R.I.P.

So, so, sad.

Mariana Bridi da Costa, the model/Brazilian Miss World finalist who had her feet and hands amputated in a bid to save her life, died on Saturday.

The model suffered from necrosis, or the fast deadening of tissue, caused by septicemia.

Septicemia, triggered by a bacterial infection, causes insufficient blood flow that can lead to organ failure.

“Unfortunately Mari couldn’t resist any longer. She passed away at 3 a.m. today,” said Henrique Fontes, executive director of Miss World Brazil, to the media via e-mail.

Our thoughts are with Miz da Costa’s family and friends.

Also, some scary figures — septicemia is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., and unfortunately, doctors don’t know too much about the ailment.

It kills approximately 800,000 in the US a year.

Please figure it out, docs! Keep us safe!
