Rob Lowe Says Sex Tape With Underage Teen Was The 'Best Thing' To Ever Happen To Him -- WTF??

Rob Lowe makes controversial comments.

Rob Lowe is thankful for the mistakes he’s made in the past… even the slightly illegal and completely inappropriate ones, too.

In a recent appearance on SiriusXM‘s The Jess Cagle Show, the 55-year-old actor says the fallout from his infamous 1988 sex tape with an underage girl is what eventually helped him get clean after struggling with his sobriety for years:

“I think it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Honestly, I do, because it got me sober. Sober got me married. I’ve been married 29 years and I have two great sons, so I don’t think any of that happens without going through that scandal.”

Lowe told the radio show hosts the scandalous video truly served as a wake-up call for him, as he continued:

“It was one of the reasons I got sober. I woke up one day and was like, ‘What am I doing with my life? 29 years in.'”

Well, that’s one way to look at things. But, we’re not exactly sure we’d consider this much of a silver lining, though.

A quick refresher: In 1988, the former Brat Pack member filmed himself having a sexual encounter with two women, but one of them turned out to be a 16-year-old girl. Lowe was 24-years-old at the time and the incident occurred the night before he made a show of support for Michael Dukakis at that year’s Democratic National Convention in Atlanta.

The recording became public when the teen’s mother found it and filed a civil lawsuit against the actor for seducing her daughter. Rob maintained his innocence and claimed he didn’t know the minor was underage before their hookup. Sixteen was two years above Georgia’s age of consent at the time — but it didn’t make the situation any less gross or stop his acting career prospects from plummeting for a few years in the wake of it all.

While reflecting on the controversial time in his life, Rob admitted he does have one regret. He said:

“The problem was, I didn’t make any money off of it like everybody does now. I was too stupid.”

Did he just… yeah. He did.

We can imagine Kim Kardashian West rolling her eyes somewhere. LOLz.

Lowe has since taken his life experiences on the road with a one-man live show based on his 2012 memoir, “Stories I Only Tell My Friends.” He explained:

“I talk a lot about recovery in the show, because I think it’s good to see the examples. I needed the examples when I was trying to change my life, and it’s moving because it’s a serious, literal life-and-death issue, but it’s also really funny. I do a whole thing about how I loved going to rehab.”

Um, whatever works best for you, dude!
