Russell Brand is reflecting on his marriage with Katy Perry.
During his appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show on Wednesday, the disgraced actor got on the topic of his ex-wife and her relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. After making a deeply distasteful joke at Justin’s expense, the conservative conspiracy theorist fessed up that he DID end things with Katy by sending her a text stating he wanted a divorce. The Get Him to the Greek actor went on to reflect how he handled his marriage with the Firework singer:
“I didn’t handle that marriage very well, I can see in retrospect absolutely what the problem was.”
He conceded he was more so “married to celebrity itself” than the individual:
“When you fall in love with someone, isn’t it so amazing to be in love? Well, imagine that compounded with everyone else acting like it’s important. It’s like, oh god this is overwhelming. Plus, she’s a lovely — do you know what the thing is about her? She has an innocence. She’s a very beautiful person. She’s also incredibly driven and worked really, really hard.”
He continued:
“Here’s me taking total responsibility for all the mistakes I made in that marriage. I wanted to grab her, kind of like, ‘There! I got it!’ You know? I felt like I was inadequate and not enough on my own, so I saw this big, glorious thing, and even though I knew her as … a normal person. Who’s famous when it comes to shower time, picking your nose, scratching your ass? Everybody breaks down into mundanity and flesh. But she was really, really, really, really lovely. But it was my fault because I pushed to get married to her early because I felt inadequate, and insecure, and and like I wasn’t enough, and that if I was married to her, I would somehow be a better person and more important. And that put her under an unnecessary amount of pressure and strain.”

The comedian added:
“And then when she was unable as a very young woman, she was, like, 25 or 26, she was young herself there, she couldn’t fulfill those obligations because she was quite right, one might argue, certainly from a materialistic, and humanistic, and celebrity-oriented perspective pursuing her dream of, which she successfully did, becoming the world’s most famous pop star. And when she was doing that, I was in some crisis, like, ‘Hold on a minute, I’m lonely and this isn’t working. Why do I not feel — I married a pop star. Come on! Why is this not working?’”

He added that things would have “probably not” worked out even if she wasn’t a celebrity because he was “fated” to marry his now wife Laura Brand.
Elsewhere, Russell, who is currently facing multiple sexual assault charges, revealed he has not been in contact with Katy since asking for a divorce, but admitted he stays in touch with the pop star’s parents because they’re “good Christian folks.”
