Ryan Murphy is defending his latest show!
Last week, his new series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dropped on Netflix. It covers the trial of the 1989 murders of Jose and Kitty Menendez by their sons, Lyle and Erik. Since its release, many viewers have criticized the show for its depiction of the brothers, even suggesting they had an incestuous relationship. Even the real-life Erik Menendez slammed the series, saying Ryan was “naive and inaccurate” about the facts of their lives. See the statement (below):

Whoa. What does Ryan have to say in response? Well, he has zero regrets over how he handled this true crime story! He fired back in an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Monday, saying:
“I think it’s interesting that he’s issued a statement without having seen the show. It’s really, really hard — if it’s your life — to see your life up on screen. The thing that I find interesting that he doesn’t mention in his quote, is if you watch the show, I would say 60 to 65 percent of our show in the scripts and in the film form center around the abuse and what they claim happened to them. And we do it very carefully and we give them their day in court and they talk openly about it.”
While Ryan recognizes handling sexual abuse on a show “can be controversial,” he felt it was important to show all the points of view that came out during the trial:
“It’s a ‘Rashomon’ kind of approach, where there were four people involved in that. Two of them are dead. What about the parents? We had an obligation as storytellers to also try and put in their perspective based on our research, which we did.”
As for the incest plotline? He is also not sorry about it! Watch the entire interview (below):
