Sam Asghari is reflecting on the “weirdest” aspects of his relationship with Britney Spears.
It’s been about a year and a half now since the Toxic singer and the Lioness actor first split up. Sam has kept things pretty light while talking about his ex-wife since they went their separate ways — mostly just saying what a great gal she was. But in a rare new candid conversation, he’s now weighing in on the most unusual part of being in a relationship with the pop star… Her conservatorship.

During Sunday’s episode of Sibling Revelry with Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, the model opened up about how things were going “really well” in the early days of his romance with Britney — until he found out about her conservatorship. She explained how it worked to him, and he was dumbfounded:
“And that’s when I was like, wait a minute. Like, I thought I’m in America. What do you mean?”
Sam, who moved to the US from Iran at age 12, called it “the weirdest thing to deal with” in their relationship. He told the sibling co-hosts:
“One of the hardest things, I think, to deal with when you go into entertainment is your parents and the people around you, and everything that happens, and everybody that comes into your life that’s taken advantage — that damages you because those are the people that are closest to you. “
He continued:
“Usually, the people that are around you, the people that you allow into your circle, you kind of are vulnerable to them. They take an advantage because they think, you know, you owe something to them or something, which is so ridiculous. That was the most difficult and weird spiral thing that I’ve witnessed in my life ever.”
Britney was placed in a conservatorship run by her father Jamie Spears in 2008 all the way until 2021 when it was officially terminated. So by the time Sam started dating the Circus singer in 2016, she was already eight years into it.
As someone looking at it with fresh eyes, did he have any impact on her getting out? Her #FreeBritney movement didn’t hit the tipping point until he was there.
No, Sam says he just tried to “provide support in that moment” and “provide information” on “resources that might be helpful” for Brit. He says he was really just trying to “really try to understand why” she was placed in a conservatorship in the first place. Clearly he didn’t see her as someone who needed to be controlled.
At the end of the day, he went back to the positivity — making it clear he doesn’t regret their time together:
“I’m always gonna be grateful and happy that it ever even happened.”
Very sweet. Sam has since moved on with a woman named Brooke Irvine — a non-celebrity, notably.
