How could something like this EVER happen?
Do they not have editors signing off on things? This wasn’t even some random county somewhere in the nation — this was the Stamford Advocate, which is a LOCAL newspaper for Newton residents!
An editor for the paper says it was a ‘terrible mistake,’ to which we say is already in the running for understatement of the year for 2013.
It was an ad for the East Coast Fine Arms Show, and it had images of several weapons. Then, the story beside it detailed the opening of the new Sandy Hook Elementary.
It should be in the handbook not to do something like this.
Upon hearing the news, Hearst Connecticut Media Group executive editor Barbara T. Roessner said:
Our newspapers should not be running gun ads — including ads for antique and collectible gun shows — next to stories about Sandy Hook. It’s insensitive, and it shouldn’t have happened. It was an oversight, and we apologize for it. We have taken steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
The step taken was ‘instilling common sense to those we have hired who hadn’t any.’
At least we hope it was.
We still feel for all those family who had to endure the holidays without their children and loved ones. What a horrible, horrible tragedy.
