Are two of the most iconic teen scream queens of the ’90s in the middle of a secret feud?! It’s a rumor that’s been tossed around a lot the past 27 years or so. Sarah Michelle Gellar vs Jennifer Love Hewitt. There’s never been much reason to believe it — it always just seemed like fans not being able to separate film from fiction. But that particular grapevine got a little extra sunlight this week, thanks to SMG!
See, the Buffy star is promoting her new show, Dexter: Original Sin, so she’s getting asked a lot of questions right now. And that happens to coincide with the rebirth of one of her first big franchises… I Know What You Did Last Summer!

On Friday morning Jennifer Love Hewitt confirmed the rumor that’s been going around the moviesphere — she’s coming back for another summer of slashing with a hook! She posted:
“It’s never too late to go back. Julie James is returning.”
The confirmation may be new, but that news has been buzzing for weeks. So Sarah was asked this week about the movie — and specifically Jennifer Love Hewitt’s potential return! And her answer had some fans doing a double take!
See, when an Extra reporter asked her, she froze and said icily:
“I have nothing to do with that.”
She then smiled and walked away. Watch!
OK, so some fans took this as a kind of Mariah Carey style “I don’t know her” move! Signs of beef? Commenters speculated:
“You can tell the way Sarah reacted about Jennifer that something happened there. They were so close during the first movie then suddenly weren’t. They also dont follow each other on insta and never have.”
“Shady towards the main character huh?”
“Oh, that was a frosty response.”
“I often wonder what happened between SMG and JLH. It’s clear they had a falling out. SMG is almost disgusted at her mention here lol.”
“whoa, sarah reacted with almost venom at the mention of jennifer, something must have happened. it saddens me because when jennifer is asked about sarah, it gets awkward but she’s gracious about her. i wish sarah would have been a little more poised. ”
“She was so cold you could feel it.”
“It’s something to do with Freddie. At the 1999 Teen Choice awards Freddie and Jen won an award and they got up to get it and Freddie seemed really shady to Jen. He was dating Sarah at the time. Freddie made comments in the past about Rachel Leigh Cook being one of the only co-stars NOT to try it on with him. He did 2 movies with Jen… fill in the rest.”
Wow, some of those theories are… rich. But what was actually going on??
SMG saw the response and realized she needed to clear the air! She took to her Instagram Stories to explained:
“Aspiring actors please note: this deer in the headlights reaction is perfect for when you are excited to see so many old friends in one project but have already stupidly forgotten what NDA means once this month.”
Ha! So that’s all it was! That ol’ Marvel star thing of having no idea what you’re allowed to say! Remember, this was hours before Love had confirmed her part!
Plus, note how she said “old friends” — def making it clear she was happy to see her old co-stars. But does that mean she’s in the movie? Well, for now she’s just owning up to being around because her hubby Freddie Prinze Jr., who didn’t die in the original, has been confirmed. In another interview she talked about how fun it was being on set:
OK, so false alarm, there’s no bad blood between SMG and JLH. Unless of course… this is all a smokescreen, and she’s the killer fisherman guy this time!
Man, that would make no sense… We’d go see it though!
