Yet another member of Donald Trump‘s cabinet is jumping ship.
Secretary of Defense James Mattis resigned following the president’s shock decision to pull out of Syria.
Trump’s military advisers and even his staunchest allies in Congress have all warned this will only help ISIS (oh, and Putin — shocker!), and now it’s cost him another cabinet member.

In his resignation letter, Mattis pulls some serious Sun Tzu Art of War level shade — but does it so politely, we’re legitimately unclear if Trump knows he’s being rebuked.
See, look, what Trump tweeted:
….equipment. General Mattis was a great help to me in getting allies and other countries to pay their share of military obligations. A new Secretary of Defense will be named shortly. I greatly thank Jim for his service!

That’s a man who can’t (or won’t) see that he’s being reproached.
So we decided to read between the lines and translate into words Lil Donnie could understand — because, as Mattis himself is quoted as once saying, Trump has the geopolitical understanding of “a fifth or sixth grader.”
Mattis writes:
“One core belief I have always held is that our strength as a nation is inextricably linked to the strength of our unique and comprehensive system of alliances and partnerships. While the US remains the indispensable nation in the free world, we cannot protect our interests or serve that role effectively without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to those allies.”
TRANSLATION: You keep attacking the U.K., France, Germany — those are our FRIENDS, you moron!
“Similarly, I believe we must be resolute and unambiguous in our approach to those countries whose strategic interests are increasingly in tension with ours. It is clear that China and Russia, for example…”
(For example. Just one country off the top of his head.)
“…want to shape a world consistent with their authoritarian model — gaining veto authority over other nations’ economic, diplomatic, and security decisions — to promote their own interests at the expense of their neighbors, America and our allies.”
TRANSLATION: Why are you trying to help THE BAD GUYS? The ones who keep ATTACKING us? Why do you like dictatorship more than democracy?? That shiz is NOT American!
“My views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues.”
TRANSLATION: I’m right, and you’re wrong. About everything. And you’re too stupid to realize it.
“We must do everything possible to advance an international order that is most conducive to our security, prosperity and values, and we are strengthened in this effort by the solidarity of our alliances.”
TRANSLATION: You are being a jerk to everyone. Stop being such a jerk. You jerk.
“Because you have the right to a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.”
TRANSLATION: You’re wrong about everything. Bitch, I quit. Call me never.
Anyway, that’s how WE read it.
