Shia LaBeouf Opens Up About Sobriety & Thanks Police Officer Who Arrested Him Back In 2017

Shia LaBeouf arrest thanks officer

Shia LaBeouf clearly has a lot of gratitude for the people in his life — and the police officer who he says forever changed his life!

The actor accepted an award on Sunday at the Hollywood Film Awards for the script of his new autobiographical film Honey Boy, which is due out in theaters on November 8. And as he opened up about the movie, the former Holes star also came clean about himself, as well as the beloved family members and others who had gotten him to this point.

This isn’t the first time in recent weeks the former Even Stevens icon has opened up about his struggles with sobriety, but it certainly may be the most eye-opening. Speaking out to the crowd before him, the 33-year-old movie star-turned-filmmaker said:

“So, um, I want to thank the police officer who arrested me in Georgia for changing my life … and I want to thank my therapist and my sponsor for saving my life, and also [to my parents] for giving me life.”

Awwww! Very magnanimous… and sweet!

It was a short, simple moment, but LaBeouf showed off a LOT of emotion while offering up the gratitude, as you can see at about the 50-second mark of this video showing the highlights from the entire evening (below):

Nice!

It seems like things are going on the right track here, too. Good for you, Shia. It’s a long journey, but keep taking it one step at a time!

Here Comes ‘Honey Boy’

Related to LaBeouf’s sobriety and growth, it’ll be very interesting to see Honey Boy when it hits theaters, only because the actor plays a fictionalized version of his own father in the movie, telling the tale of his unique rise to stardom and the major family issues at play behind the scenes.

Speaking to MTV News about the project recently, Shia didn’t shy away from getting real about the entire filmmaking process with this gem describing his sobriety, and how Honey Boy helped save his career (below):

“I was totally lost. And quite apathetic to my whole craft and my life. Really like bottom barrel for me, which is what I needed. I wasn’t going to stop doing what I was doing until that happened to me. I found my way to survive and be able to flourish. I feel like my best stuff has come in the last five years and none of that was studio work. I have a good group around me now. I am closer to my family than I ever have been before.”

So great to hear! And we really can’t wait to go see Honey Boy now, either! The film opens in theaters on November 8, y’all.
