London Police Say Sinéad O'Connor's Death Is 'Not Being Treated as Suspicious' As Investigation Continues

Police officials in London continue to look into the circumstances of singer Sinéad O’Connor‘s shocking death on Wednesday.

However, according to a new indication from the London Metropolitan Police, they do not believe the 56-year-old performer’s death to be “suspicious” at this point in their investigation.

As we’ve sadly been reporting, the Dublin-born singer was found unresponsive at a south London home on Wednesday. She was pronounced dead there by first responders, and ever since, tributes have been flowing out from across the world regarding her impactful and unique career as a musician, singer, and activist.

Now, Scotland Yard has revealed one key new detail in the tragic situation: officials say they are not treating O’Connor’s untimely death as suspicious.

In a statement to People on Thursday morning, a spokesperson for the London police outfit said:

“Police were called at 11:18hrs on Wednesday, 26 July to reports of an unresponsive woman at a residential address in the SE24 area. Next of kin have been notified. The death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”

That second-to-last sentence is the key detail here. So, police would seem to not be investigating her death as a homicide or something similar. But there still aren’t many details to go on beyond that. For now, per that same spokesperson, a cause of death has not been disclosed — though the singer has suffered from many mental health issues over the years.

In the meantime, the Nothing Compares 2 U singer’s family has already released a statement regarding Sinéad’s tragic loss. Sent out to several media outlets on Wednesday, their words read in part:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Still so, so sad. We continue to send our condolences to O’Connor’s family, friends, and loved ones.
