Tis the season to be witty? Barneys thinks so.
Barneys is going the humorous route with their “Have A Witty Holiday” campaign. The retailer’s flagship store in New York City will be decorating their holiday windows with various scenes from memorable SNL moments.
Creative director Simon Doonan says: “In this challenging season, we thought long and hard about what we were going to do for Christmas. The purpose of holiday marketing is to create desire and ignite consumer frenzy as much as possible.”
Can a window really do that?
Doonan says the store is “deemphasizing flagrant luxury and reemphasizing fun”.
Spending money is fun, when you have lots of it to throw away.
The Madison Avenue windows will be devoted to iconic SNL characters including: the Coneheads, John Belushi as a killer bee, Steve Martin as King Tut, Martin and Dan Akroyd as Two Wild and Crazy Guys, Molly Shannon’s Mary Katherine Gallagher; Gilda Radner’s Roseanne Roseannadanna; Tina Fey dressed as Sarah Palin carrying a crossbow, and Amy Poehler behind the “Weekend Update” anchor desk. Catch phrases such as “You Look Marvelous,” “Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger” and “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not” are scrawled on the walls.
If anything they’ll get a lot of looky-loos. But whether they’re going to spend their money, that we’re not sure of.
