Sofia Richie Was In Labor For SIX WEEKS Before Giving Birth -- And Had To Be Hospitalized After, Too!

Sofia Richie Reveals She Was Hospitalized Days After Giving Birth – Scary Details!

Sofia Richie‘s journey into motherhood started on a rocky note!

During Tuesday’s episode of She MD, the socialite revealed she was hospitalized two days after giving birth to her first child. Back in May, Sofia welcomed Eloise, her first child with husband Elliot Grainge. It should have been a period of pure joy, but it got pretty scary instead.

While reflecting on her pregnancy, Sofia first revealed that she had contractions for SIX WEEKS before she finally gave birth. OMG! She recalled:

“At 32 weeks, I woke up and I was like, ‘Hey, I woke up and I’m really tired today. My back really hurts. I feel a little crampy.’ And I really thought it was going to be another one of those, ‘Yeah, babe, that’s pregnancy. You’re going to be fine, but you can come in if you want me to check you’ type situations.”

But then she spoke to a fetal specialist who told her she was in “active labor,” so she went to the hospital and was there for six days before begging to go home because nothing was happening. Then for six whole weeks, she was on bed rest at home until her docs eventually induced her at 38 weeks. Whoa!

Despite all that, the 26-year-old insisted:

“I had a fantastic delivery. […] I gave birth and I was like, ‘Wow, I really did that.’ I did six weeks or however many weeks of contractions and I have my beautiful daughter. I’m healthy. I’m safe. She’s healthy. She’s safe.”

Unfortunately, that didn’t last long! Sofia wasn’t healthy. Just two days later, Sofia started to feel sick — and look it:

“I went home and I blew up like a balloon. Quite literally, just swelled.”

She added:

“I felt very ill … So [the doctor] sent over her wonderful nurse and my blood pressure was 165 over 103.”

The podcast co-host Dr. Thais Aliabadi interjected to say she was experiencing something called “postpartum preeclampsia.” According to the Mayo Clinic, that’s a rare condition that results when you have high blood pressure and excess protein in your urine shortly after childbirth. It was a scary diagnosis — but the timing also freaked Sofia out.

She said she “hid in the closet and cried” at the thought of having to leave her newborn to go back to the hospital, but her hubby ultimately convinced her to look after herself. She shared:

“My poor husband was like, ‘I have to get you to the hospital because the doctor is saying it’s just not safe. It’s not safe that you’re home.’ So I spent 24 hours in the hospital and it was really, really, really hard.”

That said, the model still faced a lot of “mom guilt” because she didn’t want to “miss a moment” of her daughter’s life — and she definitely didn’t want someone else taking care of her. Sofia explained:

“That was another thing that we talked about in the hospital. Like, ‘Yes, I feel so blessed and fortunate to be able to have people help me and to be able to have support, but I also am not interested in someone raising my kid.’ I wouldn’t have had a kid if I wasn’t ready to take that on. So my mom guilt has been balancing those two things.”

Aw!

Sounds like she went through a lot both physically and emotionally right after giving birth! But it sounds like this was an important lesson — even the best, most hands-on moms sometimes need to take time for themselves. Her health is just as important as the baby’s! Remember, you have to put your own oxygen mask on first!
