David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Back Out Of 'Star Wars' Trilogy As HBO Axes 'Game Of Thrones' Prequel Series!

David Benioff Dan Weiss back out of Star Wars trilogy.

Looks like David Benioff and D.B. Weiss won’t be putting their stank on Star Wars after all.

According to Deadline, the Game of Thrones showrunners have walked away from their deal with Disney’s Lucasfilm that involved launching a feature film trilogy that was scheduled to be released in 2022.

As fans know, D&D were set to breathe life into the post-Skywalker era of the franchise with a new story within the Star Wars universe. But, alas, (or… yay?) the duo is apparently just too busy to give the project the attention it deserves.

The Emmy-winning pair said in a statement to the outlet:

“We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.”

But not indebted enough to drop their other commitments.

Citing their historic nine-figure deal with Netflix, the creative duo said:

“There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”

Probably a good call! Especially seeing as the pair got so much heat for the epically criticized final season of Game of Thrones — which caused many to question whether they had the talent to handle a Jedi trilogy.

While D&D’s Star Wars startup was supposed to be the next-in-line installment following the upcoming The Rise of Skywalker, the final chapter of the saga that’s been charming audiences since 1977, the studio still has plenty of other Star Wars projects in the works. (The Mandalorian drops in 15 days on Disney Plus!)

Still, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy isn’t completely closing the door on a D&D Star Wars trilogy in the future. She said in a statement:

“David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

Meanwhile, the TV legacy they left behind is starting to crumble: according to reports, one of HBO’s GoT prequels is no longer moving forward.

Although the development has not been confirmed by the premium cable network, Deadline reports the prequel written by Jane Goldman and starring Naomi Watts is officially dead, with Goldman reportedly emailing the cast and crew to notify them.

The prequel, created by the Kingsman writer and George R.R. Martin, was given the pilot green light back in June 2018. It takes place thousands of years before the events of GoT, and tackles issues of race, power, and White Walkers.

Fortunately for fans, there are still other GoT prequels in the works — and D&D are clearly far too busy to involve themselves in any of them.

What do U think about the Star Wars development?
