Sometimes, all you need is love.
Security camera footage was recently released from a Portland, Oregon area high school where a tragic incident almost took place, but was foiled by a compassionate teacher.

18-year-old Angel Granados-Diaz can be seen (below) walking down a Parkrose High School hallway with a shotgun in what appears to be a large bag or clothing item. Shortly after he enters the classroom, students begin to run out of the room.
First you see the gunman with a shotgun hidden under his jacket walk by in the lower right of your screen, and then moments later kids flee. https://t.co/8jiwecCjg6 pic.twitter.com/ei0yOOCBJN

Keanon Lowe, a football coach and security guard at the school, had already been called to the fine arts building to get a student, and nearly crossed paths with Angel in the two doorways.

Lowe explained his perspective of the May 17 incident (below) to KOIN 6:
“I walk in there, I get to the classroom, I’m in the classroom for 15, 20 seconds—you know, I ask the teacher, ‘Is the student here?’ The door opens, I’m within arm’s length of the door, about 3 feet away from the door, and there’s a kid with a gun, a shotgun.”
He continued, elaborating about what went through his head in the moments after first seeing Angel:
“In a fraction of a second, I analyzed everything really fast. I saw the look in his face, look in his eyes, looked at the gun, realized it was a real gun and then my instincts just took over. I lunged for the gun, put two hands on the gun. He had his two hands on the gun and obviously the kids are running out of the classroom and screaming.”
The coach told the news outlet he doesn’t want to be called a hero, and chalks up his presence at the time to fate:
“I think the universe works in amazing ways. I think I’ve gone through stuff in my life that prepared me for that moment and I’m lucky and I’m happy that I was in that classroom for those kids and I was able to prevent that tragedy. I don’t know if ‘hero’ is the right word but the universe works in mysterious ways and I was meant to be in that classroom and I was meant to stop a tragedy.”
Regardless, this is pretty heroic!
As another teacher walks toward the two to remove the gun, Keanon and Angel share a touching hug and moment:
“I felt compassion for the kid, to be honest. I had a real-life conversation. Obviously, he broke down and I just wanted to let him know that I was there for him. I told him I was there to save him—I was there for a reason and that this is a life worth living.”

Following the ordeal, the now 19-year-old pleaded guilty to gun charges on October 10. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said he brought the gun, which was loaded with one round, to the school during a mental health crisis.
Per KOIN 6 reports, officials say Angel never pointed the gun at anyone but himself, and was drunk upon coming to the school. Investigators said he made suicidal statements to another individual prior to the incident.
