For one night and one night only, The Great Gatsby kicked Iron Man 3‘s ass in theaters!
The threequel is the second highest-grossing superhero flick ever – having now made over $1 BILLION internationally – but Baz Luhrmann├óΓé¼Γäós adaptation beat it out for the top-money-making flick in North America yesterday, with an impressive $3.9 million from 3,535 theaters!
Hell yeah! Leonardo DiCaprio still has it!
Meanwhile, the latest from Robert Downey, Jr. pulled in a close second, with $3.85 million from 4,253 screens!
As one exec puts it:
“It’s a stunning box office upset for the ages.”
Of course, IM3 is now several weeks old and it makes sense ticket sales would eventually taper off!
Neither flick should feel too comfortable, however!
According to the latest numbers, Star Trek Into Darkness, which opened last night for midnight and IMAX screenings, has already made $2 MILLION from that alone!
