The X-Files Revival Starts Off Slow But Teases Some Action To Come! Find Out The Truth In Our Premiere Episode Recap!

After over ten long years, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were back on primetime TV Sunday night when The X-Files revival premiered on FOX!
While the premiere episode lacked some of the fire of the original series, the reboot episode teased a ton of conspiracies, action, and even supposedly dead characters to come!
The episode, titled My Struggle, starts with David Duchovny‘s groggy voice-over accompanied with images of memorable mutants from the show — including an inbred Peacock brother, the brain-sucking Rob Roberts, and the grotesque flukeman!

After a flashback scene to an alien encounter in 1947, we catch up with former agent Scully (Gillian Anderson) who is now assisting surgeons at a hospital in Washington, D.C. when she gets an urgent call from fan-favorite character Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) FBI Assistant Director — who is looking for Mulder.

Scully reaches Mulder by phone, and we find out no one has been able to get ahold of the former agent for quite some time, which introduces the first big shock — Scully and Mulder are no longer together!
We last saw the couple living together in the 2008 film The X-Files: I Want to Believe. Throughout the episode, they make vague references to their breakup — hinting that Scully left Mulder, unable to deal with his obsessions.

The former couple is called on by TV conspiracy theorist Tad O’Malley (Joel McHale), who has plans to blow open “maybe the most evil conspiracy the world has ever known!” Super dramatic!
That riveting dialogue leads the gang to meet a young woman named Sveta, who says she has been implanted with alien embryos — but later on admits that she wasn’t abducted by aliens, but humans in an ARV (alien replica vehicle).

Mulder finds out that they have been misled by a mysterious older man, who was in the 1947 flashback scene in the beginning of the episode — but instead of telling Mulder the information he needs, the old man frustratingly says “you’re close!” Ugh!
The next day, Scully sees Sveta announce on TV that O’Malley wanted her to lie about being abducted. We find out later that Sveta fled her home in fear of her own safety, when her car gets blown up by a UFO at night!
With no evidence and O’Malley’s website taken down, Scully and Mulder meet in secret and agree to pursue the truth!
The episode ends with a last second cameo from the Cigarette Smoking Man, a memorable villian from the original series — who looks like he somehow survived the attack that supposedly killed him in the 2002 finale!

All in all, the premiere episode fell a little flat with too many voiceovers. But if the remainder of the six-episode reunion has more action, wit and chemistry of the original series, we think things can look up for the rest of the X-Files revival!
