The world’s funniest stars often come from terribly dark pasts. Tiffany Haddish is no exception.
In an interview with The New York Times, the Night School actress opened up about a traumatic family experience that involved her stepfather trying to kill her entire family in a car accident back in 1988.
When she was 21, Tiff’s stepfather, who she did not identify, made a shocking claim: he apparently cut the brakes of her mother’s car before the crash that changed her life for the worse. The future-movie star and her siblings were supposed to have been in the car at the time, too.

The 38-year-old actress said she isn’t sure if her stepdad had been telling the truth, but she still became hell-bent on getting revenge on him. She told the Times:
“I was like, ‘I must get revenge!’”
The South Central L.A. native wrote in her book, The Last Black Unicorn, that she had a happy childhood until the car accident when she was 8 that left her mother with major brain damage.
After the crash, Tiff’s mother would verbally and physically abuse her because, according to the actress, “she couldn’t get all her words out.” When she was 13, her mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was sent to a mental hospital, leaving Tiff and her siblings to grow up in foster care.

It’s easy to see why she’d want to get revenge on the man who claimed to be responsible for it all. But Tiff’s grandmother told her to, instead, let God handle it — and handle it, She did.
The comedian revealed:
“His life was going really great when I was trying to get revenge. As soon as I stopped doing that, life started kicking him in the ass.”
That’s when Tiff’s life started to turn around: she began therapy and was encouraged to dip her toes into stand up comedy.
The rest is side splitting history.
