Tom Hanks‘s Type 2 diabetes reveal was surprising to say the least — he’s always been in pretty decent shape, and Type 2 usually hits those who are at an unhealthy weight!
While the news came as a shock, his Type 2 is extremely manageable! He’s using diet and exercise to control it, and it sounds like he won’t be very different at all when it comes to his everyday life and career.
Except one thing we didn’t even realize: he can’t gain weight for roles anymore!
Here’s what he said:
“I’ve talked to a number of actors who have gained weight for roles and ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ just out of the sheer physical toll on one’s knees and shoulders ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ no one wants to do it again. I think that’s more or less a young man’s game. I’m 57 and I don’t think I’m going to take on any job ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ or go on any vacation again ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ and see to it that I can gain 30 lbs.”
We’re always shocked by how some actors and actresses transform their bodies for roles! Some people even take it to major extremes!!
He continued:
“Gaining and losing of weight may have had something to do with this, because you eat so much bad food and you don’t get any exercise when you’re heavy. [I feel] just fine. But I think I was genetically inclined to get it and I think it actually and goes back to a lifestyle I’ve been leading ever since I was 7 years old, as opposed to 36.”
If you remember, in Big, Tom actually played both the child and adult versions of himself — that was an INCREDIBLE amount of weight he had to gain to pull it off!

Missing out on a few roles aside, here’s the absolute worst part of it for him:
“Pizza is the most delightful thing ever invented, and it’s ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ for me ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ diabolically dangerous.”
Stay on the straight and narrow and you’ll be just fine, Tom!
You can handle anything! It’s just a shame if your life can’t really be like a whole box of chocolates anymore!
