Tom Holland is opening up about his journey to sobriety — and just how bad things would get before he made the big change.

In his new cover story for Men’s Health, the 28-year-old Marvel star opened up about his problems with alcohol. He revealed that back in 2022 he participated in “dry January” — which was what alerted him to his developing issues in the first place:

“Every Friday after work was a write-off: ‘Let’s get drunk and have a good time’. I didn’t have bad experiences, but I would drink enough so that I would ruin my next day.”

After this, he recalled having a very eye-opening conversation about his liver with a doctor. He also got slapped in the face with realization over how he’d asked his little brother to drive him home from a party because he was craving a drink:

“It was a bit of an eye-opening moment for me and for him. It’s really helpful when the people closest to you start going, ‘Are you sure?’”

After his experience with dry January, he decided to keep pushing and take it on for another month, then another, and before he knew it he was six months sober.

The real test came on the set of his movie The Crowded Room, though, as he said it was a very difficult environment:

“There was quite a lot of animosity on that set. It was not a very harmonious place, and there was a lot of arguing and butting heads. I thought, ‘If I start drinking again now, with all this going on, it’s gonna get worse, right?’”

Despite his struggles with alcohol, though, Tom admitted he never had to enter a treatment program or rehab:

“I’m quite strong-willed. When I decide to do something, I’m really gonna do it. I leaned on close ones a lot: family, friends, old colleagues, new colleagues, people that reached out that I didn’t know who also were sober.”

A piece of advice from his lawyer seemed to be something that really helped keep him on track, though:

“He gave me a really poignant piece of advice that helped me get through everything, which was: You’ll never wake up the morning after a night out and wish you had a drink. That piece of advice really rang true to me, because my problem was that I would have one drink and be fine, and then I would just go too far.”

Now the Spider-Man: No Way Home actor is two years sober! What an amazing achievement! We’re glad to hear Tom is prioritizing himself and his health.
